"Be in the moment." This is something we hear quite a lot as we read much of today's spiritual literature. Many tell me they would love to practice being in the present but have no idea what that really means, much less how to accomplish it. So, today I was thinking about this and a few thoughts came to me which I would like to share with you. Our minds are busy as little monkeys swinging from limb to limb chattering all the while about what has happened or what will happen. Seldom do we take the time to quiet this chatter and tune in to what we are experiencing in the present.
You do not need to sit in meditation for long periods of time each day trying to empty your mind and focus on your breath. It is worthwhile, however to sit quietly on a daily basis to relax and become more mindful but please know that it is not common to sit with an empty mind. There are persistent thoughts passing through our brains at a rapid fire rate. We are accustomed to that. We are busy people and we have trained ourselves to be excellent thinkers.
What we can do is allow thoughts to pass by, like fluffy white clouds moving past in the sky, and gently guide our awareness back to our breathing. Some days we may experience glimpses of the peace that is found in the slight pause between exhalations and inhalations. We may feel our heart beating and the relaxation that comes with being attuned to our breath entering and exiting our body. On other days, we may find ourselves becoming impatient. After all, we are used to working hard, aren't we? We want to be perfect and do everything perfectly. Our idea then is that we need to be actively doing - making the relaxation happen -- instead of passively allowing it to occur.
I encourage you to be patient with yourself and to sit each day for a few silent moments. In addition, however, I urge you to make your daily life a meditation in motion. By this I mean: remind yourself to move about the tasks of your day with purpose, focus and awareness. Enjoy one event, one experience at a time.
For example, when you are taking your morning shower, be aware of the details of your experience - notice how the warm water feels pouring over your body and how the soap and shampoo smells. Appreciate each part of your body as you wash and pay attention to every detail. Don't think about that important meeting coming up at the office or the school lunches you need to fix. Those things will need attending to when the time comes but for now, in this present moment, savor the luxurious experience of your shower and enjoy every moment of it.
One reason we may feel discontent, become resentful and neglect ourselves is because we miss the moments of wonder in our days. If our minds are constantly jumping back and forth from past to future and back to the past, the present eludes us and we end up feeling short changed. Our days pass by quickly and if we never pause to extract the joy from the present moment, we are not really living. We are just moving forward hoping for peace, balance and happiness but we are forever waiting. We are then missing the joy and wonder contained in the present. We are missing the whole point!
Life is to be savored in the moment. We need to think about things in order to be productive but we need to balance "busy mind" times with inner, quiet reflective times. It is then that we make contact with ourselves and our spirits. In those quiet moments our feelings deliver powerful, important messages to us and we truly make connection with our authentic selves.
Please have fun, enjoy your summertime and give yourself the quiet space you deserve!
